Neuroplasticity
Exploring the role our fearfully, wonderfully made brains play in our physical, mental and emotional health and what can change when we actively take our own thoughts captive for obedience to Christ.
One of my little stories involves a seven-year dance with a mysterious and chronic illness. A dance which gave me lots of thinking time in doctor’s offices, waiting rooms, and IV chairs as well as a lot of time on the search bar of my phone and laptop. This experience is nothing I ever would have asked for, but it brought some unexpected blessings, including a huge appreciation for our fearfully, wonderfully made brains.
I discovered that while many aspects of the human brain are still a mystery, recent decades have yielded scientific discoveries that amazingly echo the truth of scriptures like “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” and “take every thought captive for obedience to Christ.”
My husband attests that the application of self-directed neuroplasticity principles had a noticeably bigger impact on the recovery of my health than any of the dietary restrictions and supplementations or medical interventions of my first five years as a patient.
Why am I sharing this? I run into a lot of people who suffer from a wide variety of difficult-to-treat syndromes and disorders like mine. These include chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, food sensitivities and other lesser-known maladies. Despite the differences in symptoms, these conditions—especially If they haven’t responded to the standard treatments—have something in common with the chronic inflammatory response syndrome that once plagued me. The common thread is an overactive limbic system.
I’m afraid this might be starting to sound like a sciency infomercial, so let me make it clear, I’m not selling anything, just offering to share some free resources that might lead to relief and increased health.
I’m not including the list of resources right here on my webpage because most of you who visit aren’t coming to learn about how I went from a diet consisting of about a dozen safe foods to eating once more like a normal person. And I’m no expert on neuroplasticity or chronic illness.
But since this particular story has led to a happy ending for me, I do want to point out the path I followed for anyone stuck in the middle of a similar story. I know it can be a long and discouraging one and I’d love to show you a shortcut to your own happy ending if I can.
If this is you, or someone you love, just send me an email with Neuroplasticity in the subject line. I’ll send you my list of resources and also try to answer your questions or suggest which of the resources are most likely to answer them best.
Praying for God to heal, direct, and sustain you through your journey!
